July Sizzling Summer FEST GIVEAWAY
Team FEST (Florida Etsy Street Team) Giveaway from my teammate Garden Whimsies by Mary:
Summer is sizzling and so is our FEST Blog Giveaway for July from GardenWhimsiesByMary . Mary has combined her love of gardening with decorating and producing gorgeous unexpected treasures to add whimsy to your garden. Her pieces are one of a kind garden art and so colorful and fun as seen in this month’s Giveaway - a Sapphire Blue Petite Plate Flower. Mary stacks plates for “flower” garden stakes and fits them with a holder on the back so they can be set on a copper pipe and placed anywhere. Her amazing talent for combing colors and textures is evident in all of her works of art. An added benefit is her love for bringing new life to objects that might otherwise find themselves in a landfill. Treat your garden to a touch of Whimsy! HOW TO ENTER: Visit the Team FEST blog and Enter to win by visiting Mary at GardenWhimsiesByMary or any of the FEST Team members listed in the Member Section. Find your favorite item, share it with us and tell us why you love it. Remember to add your email address so we can contact you if you are the Winner! Winner picked on 08/07/11. A Pretty Good Week...

Back from a week off – and nothing (too terribly) dramatic was awaiting me at the office. Except the chaotic lack of order which is forever my workspace. Can’t seem to shake that…
I ordered my first study book for my AREs. I am oddly excited about starting to study (my inner nerd is surfacing)…
Ate some frog legs last night. They were surprisingly tender and very tasty.
And my friend Casey’s store, Wanderlust, was featured in the NY Times travel article “36 Hours in Key West, Fla” – and guess what! The “whimsical watercolors of Key West houses” at the 1 p.m./Saturday stop are my little note cards!
Great way to wrap up the week. And great motivation to paint some more!
Happy Friday!

Holidays are Coming!!
With ambitions of putting out two calendars this year, I am…half-way there. I’ve got one done! Check out my little 2011 Garden Calendar on Etsy. I’ve made the pictures tear-off note/post cards so you can use them when the month is done.
And, hey, I think some of these can count towards my 1,000,000 Leaves project too…double-duty crafts! How efficient.
Next up: zodiac calendar and Christmas cards!
Have your holiday crazies started yet??

Every Day Architecture and Imaginary Architecture
I work on parking plans, calculate percentages of pervious surfaces, research building and zoning codes, calculate exiting capacities, determine required fire ratings, work out building programs, get caught up in the difference between the frame sizes in curtainwall versus storefront systems, respond to building permit comments, review shop drawings and answer RFIs.
The amount of time I spend actually drawing buildings takes up a surprisingly small percentage of my work day. So when I come home I like to draw imaginary buildings, or colorful houses, or fanciful gardens. It feels a little bit silly, and a little bit childish, but…then again…not really. It feels light and makes me feel a little bit fanciful myself.
I get a little break from the desk-ridden drudgery tomorrow. Early morning jobsite visit – I love buildings in the demo phase. It’s fun to see everything come apart before it comes together into a (sometimes fanciful, sometimes not so, but always very) real building.

Slinkster Inks!

I love working with ink – I work of my own accord, probably not properly…I mix drawing with pens and painting with brushes. If I press too hard and bend the nib and scratch the paper…I bend the metal back and …blot my paper. And keep going.
I love that I can draw a line with a pen and then take a brush full of water and pull pigment out of this line into a wash. My favorite ink of all time – Parker Quink – is a black ink that, as it slowly dries, let’s me pull different pigments out of it…yellows, blues, violets…more on this ink later. I could go on and on! I’ll have to photograph this phenomenon to show you!

Sunny Days of 2010

Hello! To commence my blogging adventure I would like to share with you (whoever “you” are out there – thanks for reading!) my Sunny Days of 2010 calendar that I made for this New Year. My friend and lovely neighbor gave two of these as Christmas gifts, and I’ve sold another one in my Etsy shop, the namesake of this blog, Pen and Paperie (www.penandpaperie.etsy.com)!
2010 promises to be a bright year – 2009 had many bumps in the road for many of my friends and family members. I’ve got a good feeling about this year! Here’s to 2010!
